For James Loging, an orthopedic surgeon and lifelong aviation enthusiast, flight represents more than travel. It is a way to connect, to give back and to make a tangible difference, one rescue mission at a time.
A Dream That Took Flight
“Aviation has been a lifelong dream of mine,” Loging said. “I grew up fascinated by airplanes and the idea of flight, but my family didn’t have the resources for me to become a pilot.”
That dream waited through medical school, residency and the early years of his surgical career. Once he was established in practice, he finally decided it was time to learn how to fly. He earned his Private Pilot License in 2021, his Instrument Rating in 2022 and his Commercial License in 2024.
“Flying has become one of the most rewarding and freeing parts of my life,” he said. “It’s more than a hobby. It’s a passion that represents discipline, precision and perspective, much like surgery.”
A Mission in Motion
“Flying my Cirrus feels like freedom with purpose,” Loging said. “There’s something extraordinary about lifting off at sunrise, watching the world fall away beneath the wings and knowing that you’re headed somewhere to make a difference.”
That sense of purpose led him to Pilots N Paws, a nonprofit organization that connects volunteer pilots with animal rescues across the country. “I started volunteering after reading incredible stories of pilots using their aircraft to give animals a second chance at life. It was the perfect way to combine my love for flying with a cause that truly matters.”
Pilots N Paws connects shelter teams with volunteer pilots willing to transport animals from overcrowded or high-risk facilities to their new homes. “I signed up and got my first mission request within days,” Loging said. “I was hooked.”
Since joining the organization, he has transported more than twenty dogs, each with a story of resilience. “From seniors who want love in their final years to puppies getting their first real shot at life, every mission is deeply meaningful.”
The Journey to a Second Chance
A typical Pilot N Paws mission begins when Loging receives a notification with the pickup and drop-off details. He reviews weather and flight path plans, coordinates with both rescue teams and prepares his Cirrus aircraft. On the day of the flight, he meets the shelter or foster volunteers on the tarmac, loads the animal safely and takes off.
“After landing, the receiving family or rescue is usually waiting, often with tears in their eyes,” he said. “Watching a scared animal step into the arms of someone ready to love them — it’s hard to put that feeling into words.”
Over time, Loging has developed relationships with rescue along the East Coast who know they can count on him. Most of his flights connect North and South Carolina with rescues in Virginia, Maryland, Alabama and Florida.
Stories That Stay With You
“Two stories come to mind instantly — Delta and Lucy,” he said.
Delta was found near death, malnourished and nearly hairless. After months of care, she was finally healthy enough for adoption. “I flew her from Georgia to her new family in Florida,” Loging said. “A few days later, they sent me pictures of Delta at the beach, tail wagging and eyes full of joy. They even took her to Starbucks for her first pup cup. Seeing her go from hopeless to radiant was everything.”
Then there was Lucy, a nine-year-old Irish Setter who had spent her whole life with one family before being surrendered. “She was heartbroken and confused,” Loging said. “I flew her to meet her new adoptive mom, who had recently lost her own Irish Setter. Watching Lucy step into that woman’s arms felt like witnessing two souls heal each other at the same moment.”
The Next Horizon
Loging hopes to one day expand his reach with the 西锐视觉喷气机. “The Vision Jet represents the next chapter in my aviation journey,” he said. “Its range, speed and payload would allow me to take on more complex missions and travel even farther.”
What excites him most, however, is the potential to inspire others. “The Vision Jet isn’t only an aircraft. It’s a platform for impact. It’s a way to connect more places, save more lives and show what’s possible when aviation and compassion come together.”
For James, that is what flying is all about — purpose, precision and the power to make a difference.
