For Josh Dobbs, success has never followed a single path.
He is a quarterback entering his tenth season in the NFL. He is an engineer, a philanthropist, and above all, a problem solver.
That mindset has shaped every chapter of his journey. From the football field to the flight cabin, Dobbs is building a life defined by curiosity, discipline and a constant drive to grow.
A Mind Built to Solve
Dobbs credits much of his approach to life to a lesson learned early on. Critical thinking matters.
“I’ve always loved putting myself in situations where I have to solve problems,” he says. “That’s where growth happens.”
On the field, that shows up in reading defenses and making split second decisions. Off the field, it led him to pursue aerospace engineering at the University of Tennessee while leading a Division 1 football program.
His schedule demanded precision. Early workouts. Full academic days. Practice, meetings and late nights in the library.
It was never about doing more. It was about making every hour count.
A Lifelong Fascination with Flight
Long before aviation became part of his routine, it captured his imagination.
As a kid, Dobbs would choose flying over driving whenever possible. He memorized aircraft types and studied every takeoff and landing from his window seat. A visit to the Kennedy Space Center sparked something deeper. A Tuskegee Airmen summer program brought that interest to life.
Sitting in the cockpit for the first time made it real.
“I remember thinking, I want to do this one day.”
For years, that dream lingered quietly in the background and when the timing was right, he pursued it with passion.
Turning Interest into Action
In 2024, Dobbs made the decision to pursue his private pilot’s license.
“I think a lot of people say they want to do something. Taking action is where it becomes real.”
Training in the Bay Area placed him in one of California’s most demanding flying environments in the country. Busy airspace, shorter runways and unpredictable conditions created the challenge he was looking for.
The process required focus, repetition and patience. From his first takeoff to learning how to land, each step reinforced something bigger.
“When you go from not knowing how to land a plane to doing it yourself, it changes how you see everything.”
What began as curiosity quickly became something more intentional. Flying demanded presence, discipline and trust in the process. Each lesson built on the last, turning small victories into momentum and momentum into confidence.
Where Football and Flight Connect
At first glance, football and aviation seem unrelated. For Dobbs, the connection is clear.
Both demand preparation, precision and accountability.
“As a quarterback, you hear the play, repeat it perfectly and execute. Flying is the same. You receive a route, read it back, and fly it.”
In both roles, responsibility sits squarely on your shoulders.
“When you are the pilot in command, it is on you. Your family is in the back seat. That pressure feels familiar.”
Aviation has sharpened the same skills that define his performance on the field. Focus, discipline and attention to detail continue to carry over in meaningful ways.
A New Perspective on Travel
With a schedule that spans training, appearances and philanthropic work, time is one of Dobbs’ most valuable resources.
Flying has changed how he uses it.
In a single weekend, he can move between Knoxville, Augusta and Bristol while still making it home at the end of the day. What would take days becomes hours with Personal Aviation™.
“Being able to get where I need to be and still come home matters.”
It is not only about efficiency. It is about control over how time is spent.
Purpose Beyond the Field
That same mindset extends into the Astrordinary Dobbs Foundation.
Focused on STEM education, the foundation creates opportunities for students to experience science and engineering in real ways. From space camp experiences to attending major aerospace events, the goal is to connect learning with application.
“I was fortunate to have those opportunities growing up. I want to create that for others.”
The impact is not measured only in programs or events. It is seen in the moments when curiosity turns into possibility.
A Different Definition of the Cirrus Life™
For Dobbs, aviation represents freedom.
It is the ability to say yes to opportunities across the country while staying grounded in what matters most. It is the flexibility to maintain his training routine while expanding his reach.
He compares it to unlocking new areas in a game. As skills grow, more of the world becomes accessible.
“That is what flying has done for me. It has opened up new possibilities.”
Looking Ahead
After nearly a decade in the NFL, Dobbs continues to think about the future.
Aviation will play a role in what comes next. Whether through business, fleet operations or expanding access to flight through his foundation, the possibilities continue to evolve.
For now, the focus remains on learning and growing within the space.
“I am excited to see where it leads.”
The Throughline
From a young athlete discovering football to a professional quarterback and Cirrus pilot, Josh Dobbs’ journey is grounded in one idea.
Growth comes from stepping into something new and committing to it.
Each experience builds on the last. Each challenge creates opportunity and for Dobbs, that mindset continues to carry him forward.
