How to Clean Your Cirrus Aircraft

March 13, 2020

Cirrus Aircraft is dedicated to ensuring the safety, health and welfare of our owners, pilots, operators and their passengers. With the recent developments of the COVID-19 situation, we understand the need for added diligence in cleaning the surfaces in your aircraft. We have worked with our engineering team, as well as our external suppliers and also reviewed guidance from the National Business Aircraft Association (NBAA) to compile a list of the most effective products for the cleaning of your aircraft, while also protecting the durability and longevity of your interior. Additionally, you can purchase a conveniently packaged cleaning kit from Cirrus Direct, complete with solutions and instructions to keep your Cirrus aircraft clean on-the-go.

Before cleaning your aircraft, please be aware that the use of standard cleaning products – particularly those traditionally used as commercial and/or household disinfectants – can be damaging to the interior of your aircraft. We do not recommend the use of jellied alcohol (hand sanitizer), ammonia-based cleaners or other commercially available disinfectants for the cleaning of any of the surfaces found in your aircraft. We encourage you to use only the products referenced below and, in your Pilot, Operating Handbook as the only approved cleaning solutions for your Cirrus aircraft.

Additionally, the best way to ensure the safety of you and your passengers is to practice sound hygiene protocol as advised by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), including adherence to social distancing protocol whenever possible and to encourage any passenger who feels ill to stay at home and rest.

Avionics Displays
Recommended Cleaning Supplies:

  • Optimax for general cleaning
  • 70% isopropyl alcohol for disinfecting

First, with the display screen powered OFF, disinfect the screens by applying 70% isopropyl alcohol to a clean microfiber cloth and wiping the screens. Next, use a clean, lint-free cloth dampened with Optimax solution and wipe the screen and/or instrument panel in one direction, moving from the top of the display to the bottom. Gently wipe with a clean cotton cloth to dry.

Avionics Buttons & Knobs
Recommended Cleaning Supplies:

  • Mild detergent and water for general cleaning

Clean avionics buttons and knobs with a clean, low-lint or microfiber cloth by wiping with a solution of warm water and mild detergent. Make sure to wipe completely dry to prevent buttons and knobs from gumming up or becoming slippery.

Windshield and Windows
Recommended Cleaning Supplies:

  • Prist for general cleaning
  • 70% isopropyl alcohol for disinfecting

Apply isopropyl alcohol to a window cleaning cloth and wipe affected area. Then, apply Prist cleaner to one area at a time and wipe away with a a moist cloth or chamois in an up and down motion.

Headsets
Recommended Cleaning Supplies:

  • Mild detergent soap and water for general cleaning
  • 70% isopropyl alcohol for disinfecting

Apply isopropyl alcohol to a microfiber cloth and wipe high touch surfaces on the headset. Surfaces can additionally be cleaned by wiping down the headset with a solution of mild detergent and water with a damp microfiber cloth. (Do not soak or dunk the headset in water.) The microphone muff can also be submerged in soapy water and washed carefully, then left to dry.

O2 Masks and Cannulas
Recommended Cleaning Supplies:

  • Mild detergent soap and water for general cleaning
  • 70% isopropyl alcohol for disinfecting

Wash with warm water and a mild detergent soap, then flush with warm water. Allow to dry, at least partially, before applying isopropyl alcohol on the high touch surfaces with a microfiber cloth. We do not recommend sharing masks or cannulas at this time, even following a cleaning.

Leather Upholstery and Seats
Recommended Cleaning Supplies:

  • Mild detergent soap and water for general cleaning
  • Perrone Aerospace Cleaner with Conditioner for deeper cleaning

Use a diluted mix of mild soap and water to wipe down the leather upholstery of your aircraft and dry with a soft, cotton cloth. For deeper cleaning, spray liberal amounts of the Perrone cleaner onto a clean, lint-free or microfiber cloth and wipe down the leather seat or any leather covered surface.

Aircraft (Non-Avionics) Hard Surfaces
Recommended Cleaning Supplies:

  • Mild detergent soap and water for general cleaning
  • Celeste Sani-Cide EX3 for disinfecting

Use a diluted mix of mild soap and water to wipe down the hard surfaces of your aircraft and dry with a soft, cotton cloth. To disinfect, dampen a microfiber cloth with Sani-Cide and wipe surfaces. Wait 10 minutes, then wipe the surface again with a clean microfiber cloth to remove any Sani-Cide residue. Follow with an approved interior cleaning product to further protect surfaces.

Headliner and Trim Panels
Recommended Cleaning Supplies:

  • Vacuum to remove debris
  • Mild detergent soap and water for general cleaning
  • Celest Sani-Cide EX3 for disinfecting

The headliner and trim panels should be vacuumed and then cleaned with a diluted mixture of mild soap and water. To disinfect, apply a spray mist of Sani-Cide but do not soak surfaces. Allow areas to dry.

Carpet and Flooring
Recommended Cleaning Supplies:

  • Vacuum to remove debris
  • Mild detergent soap and water for general cleaning
  • Celest Sani-Cide EX3 for disinfecting

Regular vacuuming of the carpet is recommended. If further cleaning is required, the use of carpet cleaner can be used for spot cleaning. For sanitizing, the best solution is steam cleaning. Additionally, you can apply a spray mist of Sani-Cide but do not soak surfaces. Allow areas to dry.

In addition to the list provided here, we encourage you to watch the video below and also reference Section 8 of your SR20/22/22T or Vision Jet Pilot Operating Handbook as the best resource for cleaning your aircraft on an ongoing basis. This section outlines both recommended cleaning products as well as methods and techniques for cleaning each surface for optimal results.
